Context

Over the last four years, UNDP, and other UN Agencies, is applying its local governance and local development knowledge, experience and tools towards supporting countries in implementing the SDGs, including at the local level.

With the objective to valorise this knowledge, I was commissioned to develop a comparative study of the most relevant tools and methodologies for the implementation of the SDGs at the local level.

The analysis resulted in a publication that collects the most practical tools to help local governments (and other stakeholders) deliver the 2030 Agenda.

Process

Research and mapping of local governance and local development-related tools and methodologies. The selection process was based on a thorough revision and categorization of more than 150 tools and includes feedback received during a consultation period;

Comparative analysis of the most relevant tools and methodologies based on criteria including: their practicality (i.e. the extent to which they guide and help the user to take action); focus on localization (rather than national scale); and year of development (more recent publications have been prioritized);

Revision and consultation with key stakeholders and partners;

Development of the final inventory.

Outcome

Thanks to this collection, subnational governments and other key actors such as civil society organizations, business, academia and development practitioners in general have open access to a repository of tools that will help them plan, implement and monitor the localization of the SDGs.
